Windmill transformers are turbine duty transformers with input voltages varying from 380V to 760V while the same is stepped up generally between 11KV to 33KV. These transformers operate on average load factor of as low as 35%. When lightly loaded, the core losses become significant factor as compared to load losses. Hence, the ownership cost or the capitalised cost of the transformer plays an important role in selection of the transformer besides thermal cycling caused by varying loads which may accelerate the aging process.
